Seen from the water, Careno forms an inverted triangle of stone houses on the steep eastern shore of Lake Como. Lanes and stairways fall sharply from the road to a tiny harbour, a beach and one of the lake’s most atmospheric Romanesque churches.

Careno belongs to Nesso, but its shape, waterfront and slower rhythm give it the feeling of a self-contained village.

Careno was once an independent community and is recorded in the medieval statutes of Como. Its inhabitants worked the steep land and nearby quarries, extracting the dark local stone used throughout the lake region. The hamlet later became part of Nesso, while its old churches and compact pattern survived the modern shore road above.

Where Careno sits on the lake

Careno lies between Pognana Lario and central Nesso on the eastern shore of the Como branch. The village drops from the road to the lake, so almost every visit involves steps and a noticeable climb back up.

The best things to see in Careno

1. The Church of San Martino

Set close to the water, San Martino is documented before 1184 and remains one of the most evocative medieval churches on this shore. Its simple stonework, Romanesque bell tower and lake-facing position are the highlight of Careno.

2. The stepped stone village

Careno’s lanes descend between tightly packed houses built from local stone. The steep layout explains the village’s distinctive triangular outline and turns a short walk into a small exploration.

3. The pier and small beach

At the bottom of the village, the old landing place and modest beach open directly onto the lake. Boat calls are limited, but arriving from the water reveals Careno at its most dramatic.
