Some Lake Como villages sit at the water; Pognana Lario sits above it. This small village clings to the steep eastern shore between Como and Nesso, its houses stacked on terraces with the lake spread out below.

Pognana Lario is an old settlement on the steep eastern bank of the Como arm, one of the string of small communities that lived from fishing and terraced farming. Its position high above the water kept it modest and self-contained, and it has stayed that way — a quiet village that the crowds pass beneath.

Where Pognana Lario sits on the lake

Pognana Lario lies on the eastern shore of the Como arm, between Faggeto Lario to the south and Nesso to the north, with the hills of the Triangolo Lariano rising sharply behind. Its terraced setting gives it some of the widest lake views on this stretch of shore.

The best things to see in Pognana Lario

1. The views over the lake

The village’s great asset is its outlook. From the terraces and the road above, the whole width of the lake opens up toward the western shore and the villas beyond — a broad, quiet panorama that rewards simply stopping and looking.

2. The old village and church

Pognana’s centre is a small knot of stone houses, stepped lanes and the eighteenth-century parish church of the Santissima Trinità, with the older San Miro and its frescoes nearby — little changed and rarely busy. It takes only a few minutes to wander, and gives a real sense of an unspoilt eastern-shore community.

3. The shore and walks

Down at the water there are small, quiet coves; above, footpaths climb into the wooded slopes of the Triangolo Lariano. It is a peaceful base for a swim or an easy walk, well away from the central-lake crowds.
