Torno Lake Como rewards the traveller who actually steps off the boat: steep stone lanes, two old churches at the water’s edge, and a harbour where the ferries thin out and the espresso arrives without a queue. \u7b80\u8981\u5386\u53f2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Torno was once a prosperous wool-working town. Through the Middle Ages its weavers and merchants traded across the water, and the money that trade brought paid for the churches and tall stone houses that still climb the slope. The town’s rivalry with Como ran deep. In 1522, in the course of that feud, Como’s forces sacked and largely destroyed Torno, a blow from which it never commercially recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set above the village, San Giovanni Battista carries a superb marble portal, a Renaissance work attributed to the Rodari school, the same circle of sculptors who worked on Como’s cathedral. Inside, the church guards its greatest treasure: the Santo Chiodo, or Holy Nail, held by tradition to be one of the nails of the Crucifixion and said to have reached Torno with a bishop returning from the Holy Land in 1099. The relic is kept in a casket secured by seven separate keys, and celebrated each June at the village’s patronal feast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just north of the village, half-hidden in the trees, stands Villa Pliniana. Built in 1573 for Count Giovanni Anguissola, it takes its name from the intermittent spring in its courtyard, first described by Pliny the Younger in Roman times. Byron, Shelley and Rossini all passed through its rooms; today it is a private estate and one of the lake’s most exclusive wedding venues.
