For all its stillness now, Isola Comacina was once among the most powerful places on the lake. In the early Middle Ages it was a fortified refuge and a naval force, siding with Milan through the long wars between the lake’s rival city-states. Churches crowded its slopes; it mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the island’s southern tip stands the Locanda dell’Isola Comacina, a legendary inn known for its long, unchanging set menu and a theatrical fire ritual said to lift the old curse from all who dine there. 2. The ruins, Sant’Eufemia, and Lingeri’s artists’ houses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Walk the island and you walk through its layers. The great prize is the ruined Basilica of Sant’Eufemia, once the island’s principal church, its foundations and apse still legible among the grass \u2014 the heart of an open-air archaeological park scattered with the outlines of other early churches. Its strangest note is modern: in 1940 the Rationalist architect Pietro Lingeri built three houses here for visiting artists, spare white volumes in the language of interwar modernism, standing in quiet dialogue with the ancient stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. the Antiquarium<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To make sense of the ruins, visit the Antiquarium on the mainland at Ossuccio, housed in a medieval building that once sheltered pilgrims on their way through. Its collection gathers the finds from the island’s excavations \u2014 Roman glass and coins, ceramics, early-Christian fragments \u2014 and tells the story of how one small island became, for a while, a power on Lake Como.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
