\u7b80\u8981\u5386\u53f2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gravedona was the leading town of the Tre Pievi \u2014 the “three parishes” of Gravedona, Dongo and Sorico that governed the upper lake through the Middle Ages. Trade in wool, iron and lake fish made it prosperous, and its churches were raised by the Maestri Comacini, the travelling master masons of the Como region whose work spread across Lombardy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the late sixteenth century the territory passed to Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, a churchman born nearby who rose to become the Vatican’s Secretary of State. His great lakeside palace still carries his name. In 2011 Gravedona merged with two neighbouring villages to become Gravedona ed Uniti, but the old centre remains the heart of the Alto Lario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gravedona’s parish church was rebuilt around 1072 over an early-Christian basilica, and its real treasure lies below: a low, columned crypt, one of the oldest spaces in the town, cool and dim beneath the later interior. It is easy to walk past, and worth the few steps down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
