Bellano grew up on moving water \u2014 not the lake, but the Pioverna. For centuries the river’s force turned mills and forge-hammers; iron from the mines of the Valsassina was worked here from the 1500s, and in 1870 the Cotonificio Cantoni brought cotton-spinning and a working-class rhythm that set the town apart from its prettier neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bellano lies on Lake Como’s central eastern shore, a few minutes north of Varenna and just south of Dervio, roughly opposite Menaggio where the lake’s two western arms meet. 2. The Ca’ del Diavol<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the mouth of the gorge stands a strange three-storey pentagonal tower, the “Devil’s House”. Already recorded in the early 1600s, its upper walls carry faded frescoes of zodiac signs and mythological figures which \u2014 along with a tangle of local legend \u2014 earned it the name. Restored into a small multimedia museum, it now tells the story of the Orrido and the superstitions that grew up around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up in the old centre, this late-14th-century church is Bellano’s quiet showpiece. Rebuilt after a catastrophic 1341 flood by master builders from Campione, its fa\u00e7ade is banded in black and white marble and set with a delicate terracotta-and-glass rose window \u2014 a Lombard-Romanesque design that rewards a slow look. Inside are three naves, frescoed vaults and finely carved confessionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. The old town and Andrea Vitali’s Bellano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Finally, come back down to the water. Bellano’s small harbour and lakeside promenade look straight across to the mountains of the western shore, with a couple of caf\u00e9s, a gelato and benches angled at the view. It is the right place to end an afternoon, waiting for the ferry as the light turns gold on the far peaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
