The younger Pliny, writing in the first century AD, kept villas on Lake Como, and local tradition places one on this promontory. By around 1100 Bellagio functioned as an independent commune with its own court, before Como reasserted control in the turbulent decades of Frederick Barbarossa’s campaigns. In the thirteenth century it was drawn into Milan’s orbit under the Visconti, and for generations a lake magistrate patrolled these waters against pirates and smugglers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bellagio stands at the very tip of the promontory that separates Lake Como’s two southern arms, at the point known as Punta Spartivento \u2014 roughly, “the point that divides the wind.” This is the centre of the lake’s famous triangle: Varenna lies across the water to the east, Menaggio to the west, and fast ferries stitch all three together in minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laid out from 1808 to a design by the architect Giocondo Albertolli and completed around 1810, these lakeside gardens were commissioned by Francesco Melzi d’Eril, a leading statesman of Napoleon’s Italian Republic. A ten-minute walk north of the centre brings you to the northern tip of the promontory, where a small terrace and bar look up the lake as the two arms peel away on either side. It is the clearest way to understand Bellagio’s geography, and one of the finest free views on Lake Como. For a quieter detour, a short path leads the other way to Pescallo, a tiny fishing hamlet on the Lecco side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
