Tremezzo lies on the western shore at the mid-point of the lake, just north of Lenno and just south of Cadenabbia and Griante. Directly opposite, across roughly two kilometres of water, sits Bellagio \u2014 which makes this one of the easiest bases from which to hop between the lake’s three arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tremezzo’s waterfront is made for aimless walking. A promenade threads past ferry landings, caf\u00e9s and shuttered boathouses, with the mountains of the eastern shore rising straight from the water opposite. Its centrepiece is the frontage of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, an Art Nouveau palace of 1910 whose ochre-and-cream fa\u00e7ade and lakeside terraces have become among the most photographed sights on the lake. You needn’t be a guest to admire it from the promenade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a longer wander, pick up the Greenway del Lago di Como, a gentle walking route of around ten kilometres that follows the old Strada Regina from Colonno to Griante. It runs directly through Tremezzo, linking seven villages, small harbours, churches and villa gardens along the way. You don’t have to walk it all \u2014 join it for a stretch, then catch a boat back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, simply stop and look. Because Tremezzo faces the point where Como’s three arms meet, the outlook across to Bellagio is among the finest on the lake \u2014 the wooded promontory, the hills of the eastern shore, the boats crossing between them. Late afternoon, when the light turns gold, is the moment to take a drink by the water and let the lake do the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
