Everything shifted in 1921. On 15 March that year the engineer Carlo Guzzi and the financier Giorgio Parodi founded Moto Guzzi in Mandello, and the company never left. The winged eagle on its badge honours a third friend, the pilot Giovanni Ravelli, killed in a flying accident in 1918. A century on, the works still hum at the water’s edge, and the town’s identity is inseparable from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moto Guzzi works have stood on Via Parodi since 1921, and the company museum \u2014 long a pilgrimage for riders \u2014 holds decades of racing machines, prototypes, and the historic wind tunnel, the first built by any European motorcycle maker. After a sweeping renovation, a new museum and factory are reopening in September 2026, timed to the marque’s 105th anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down at the shore, the church of San Lorenzo anchors the historic core, dedicated to the town’s patron saint. Around it, narrow lanes open onto small squares and the lakefront \u2014 the kind of unhurried, lived-in centre where fishermen once mended nets and locals still take their evening walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few lake towns put you this close to serious peaks. The jagged Grignetta and the higher Grigna Settentrionale rise straight from Mandello’s back, threaded with trails and prized by climbers for their limestone spires.
