Its tall stone houses rise straight from the lake, their walls washed by the waves, linked by a maze of covered passages so narrow the sky disappears overhead.

This is one of the most atmospheric small villages on the whole lake, and one of the least changed. There are no big sights here — the village itself is the sight.

간략한 역사

Brienno is an ancient fishing settlement on the old Regina road along the western shore. Its defensive, huddled layout — houses packed tight against the water, linked by tunnels — belongs to a shore where the rock leaves no room to spread, and it has survived remarkably intact.

The lake has not always been gentle with it: a violent flood tore through the village in July 2011 and a second struck in July 2021, and careful restoration followed each. What remains is a rare, near-complete old waterfront that repays slow, quiet exploration.

Where Brienno sits on the lake

Brienno lies on the western shore of the Como arm, between Laglio to the south and Argegno to the north, roughly halfway between the city of Como and the villas of the Tremezzina. Steep wooded slopes rise sharply behind it, which is part of why the village grew so tightly against the water.

A narrow lakeside riva threads between the old houses of Brienno. The androni and the old village

The heart of Brienno is its tangle of androni — covered passageways and steep stepped lanes that thread between the houses, opening now and then onto a slot of blue water. There is no through-traffic; you simply wander, and the medieval village unfolds around you.

2. The waterfront houses

From the lake, Brienno’s defining image is its wall of tall houses standing directly in the water, doors and steps meeting the waves. It is best appreciated from a boat or the ferry, and it is one of the most photographed stretches of the western shore.

3. 산티 나자로 에 첼소 성당

The village church, dedicated to Santi Nazaro e Celso, anchors the old centre and rewards a brief look for its quiet interior. Around it, small squares and a fountain mark the places where village life has always gathered.

방문 계획

가는 중입니다. Brienno sits on the western-shore road between Laglio and Argegno and has a landing stage on the lake; the ferry is the loveliest way to arrive.
