Come in the early evening, when the light softens over Bellagio across the water and the whole shore turns gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climb the stepped lanes behind the piazza and the village changes character entirely. This is the medieval core, where houses trace the outline of the vanished castle and stretches of its perimeter wall still stand. Look for the Spanish-style “sailing” bell tower of San Carlo, built on the fortress ruins in 1614, and for weathered medieval carvings set into the stonework.
