Menaggio is a village built around a junction. Stand on its waterfront and three routes open at once: south along the western shore, north toward the Alps, and straight across the water to Bellagio and Varenna. For two thousand years, people have stopped here for the same reason \u2014 Menaggio is where the roads meet the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That crossroads history has left it unusually complete. There is a proper arcaded piazza, a long promenade, a tangle of stepped lanes climbing to castle ruins, and a green valley behind town that most visitors never think to enter. Menaggio Lake Como rewards the traveller who arrives with a plan and stays long enough to use the place as a base rather than a photo stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Romans laid the Via Regina along this shore \u2014 the road that linked Como with the Alpine passes and the lands beyond them. Menaggio guarded the point where that road forked westward toward Lake Lugano and Switzerland, a position worth holding. Between the eighth and tenth centuries a castle rose above the village to watch the traffic on the fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fortress was reckoned nearly impregnable, and yet it fell \u2014 destroyed in 1523 by militias from the Grisons during their raids into the region. In 1614 the church of San Carlo was raised on its ruins. Centuries later a gentler occupation arrived: silk weaving, and then tourism. The Grand Hotel Victoria opened on the lakefront in 1885, and Menaggio has been receiving travellers ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Menaggio sits on the lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Menaggio stands on the western shore at the exact point where Lake Como divides into its two southern arms. Directly opposite lies Bellagio on its promontory, with Varenna a little to the north \u2014 together the three form the celebrated central triangle, each a short crossing from the others by boat. It is the busiest stretch of water on the lake, and Menaggio is one of its three corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the village the land rises fast. The old Via Regina still threads north along the shore, while the Val Menaggio opens to the west, carrying road and river up toward Lake Lugano and the Swiss border less than an hour away. Few places on Lake Como are so well positioned for going somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The lakefront promenade and Piazza Garibaldi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Piazza Garibaldi is the village’s living room \u2014 an arcaded, caf\u00e9-lined square set just back from the water, with the tourist office tucked under the porticoes. From here a broad promenade runs along the lake past the stately Grand Hotel Victoria of 1885 and a bronze monument by Francesco Somaini honouring the local silk weavers. Come in the early evening, when the light softens over Bellagio across the water and the whole shore turns gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The old upper village and castle ruins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Climb the stepped lanes behind the piazza and the village changes character entirely. This is the medieval core, where houses trace the outline of the vanished castle and stretches of its perimeter wall still stand. Look for the Spanish-style “sailing” bell tower of San Carlo, built on the fortress ruins in 1614, and for weathered medieval carvings set into the stonework. It is a ten-minute walk that peels back a thousand years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Val Sanagra and the Sass Corb\u00e9e gorge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Behind town, the Sanagra river tumbles down a wooded valley that has been made a regional park. The set piece is the Sass Corb\u00e9e \u2014 a colossal boulder wedged between the walls of a narrow gorge, with the water rushing beneath it. The paths through Val Sanagra range from gentle strolls to fuller circuits; sections can close after landslides, so check locally before setting out. It is the quiet, green counterpoint to the busy shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. The Antica Strada Regina walk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Roman road survives here as one of the lake’s finest footpaths. From Piazza Garibaldi the route heads north along the shore to Nobiallo, with its leaning thirteenth-century bell tower, then on toward the castle village of Rezzonico \u2014 roughly nine kilometres of lake, chestnut wood and old stone. Along the way you pass Villa la Gaeta, the lakeside mansion that appears in the James Bond film Casino Royale<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1907 by English visitors who met at the Hotel Victoria, this is one of Italy’s oldest golf clubs. The eighteen-hole course sits above the village at Croce, laid out across a green shelf with the lake below and the mountains beyond \u2014 a setting that makes even a casual round feel like an occasion. Visitors are welcome; book a tee time ahead in high season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
