Photo : Maurizio Moro5153 / Wikimedia Commons – CC BY-SA 4.0.

Dongo belongs to the Alto Lario, the upper reach of Lake Como, and for centuries it was one of the “Tre Pievi” — the three medieval parishes of Gravedona, Dongo and Sorico that governed the northern lake together. Remote from Como and Milan, they kept a stubborn independence and a shared identity that still lingers today.

For much of that time, Dongo lived on iron. Ore from the valleys behind the town fed furnaces and forges from at least the fifteenth century, and metalworking remained the town’s trade well into the industrial age. It is an unusual inheritance for a lake better known for silk and villas, and it gives Dongo a working, unpolished character all its own.

Palazzo Manzi on Dongo’s main square houses the town hall and the End of the War Museum. Photo: Torsade de Pointes / Wikimedia Commons – CC0.

Les 5 meilleures choses à voir à Dongo

The museum’s setting is itself a sight. Palazzo Manzi is a dignified neoclassical palace of the early nineteenth century, built for a noble family and now the town hall. It dominates the main square and faces the old landing stage, its frescoed rooms — including the ornate Sala d’Oro — hinting at former grandeur. Around it runs Dongo’s arcaded lakefront, low stone porticoes that shelter the shore and give the town its unmistakable profile from the water.

3. Santa Maria in Martinico

A short walk from the centre stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Martinico, built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Simple and solid in the manner of the region’s oldest churches, it holds works gathered over the centuries, among them a gilded silver processional cross dating to 1513. It is a reminder of how old the settled life of this shore really is.

4. Le patrimoine sidérurgique

Dongo’s industrial past is woven through the town rather than gathered in one museum. Traces of its long iron trade — the sites of old forges, the memory of factories that once employed much of the valley — sit alongside the medieval and the modern. Keep an eye out as you walk: this is one of the few places on the lake where you can feel a genuine working history.

5. La promenade au bord du lac

Finally, there is the simple pleasure of the lungolago. Dongo’s promenade is unhurried and largely local, a place to sit with a coffee and watch the ferries cross to the eastern shore. The views open north toward Gravedona and across to the mountains of the Alto Lario, and in the late afternoon the light here is among the finest on the lake.

Planifier votre visite

J'y arrive.

Associer Dongo aux localités voisines Musso et Gravedona, or find more of the lake’s quiet corners through our Guide des trésors cachés.
