The nineteenth century sealed its reputation. In 1814 Caroline of Brunswick — the estranged wife of Britain’s future George IV — bought the old cardinal’s villa and renamed it Villa d’Este, after a noble line she claimed as ancestors. Silk barons followed, raising grand residences of their own, and by the late 1800s Cernobbio had become a fashionable resort. It has never really stopped being one.

Villa d’Este

The most storied address on the lake. Built in the 1560s for Cardinal Gallio and reborn as a luxury hotel in 1873, Villa d’Este is a legend of European hospitality, its gardens famous for a tiered mosaic nymphaeum and a long avenue of cypresses climbing the hillside. Be honest with your expectations: this is a working five-star hotel, so the interiors and grounds are essentially reserved for guests. Two events do open the gates to the wider world — the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, a celebrated classic-car showcase held each spring, and the Ambrosetti economic forum every September, when the villa hosts world leaders and financiers. To understand where it fits among the lake’s great houses, see our guide to the Les plus belles villas et jardins du lac de Côme.

2. Villa Erba

A grand neo-Renaissance villa built at the end of the nineteenth century by the Erba family and forever linked to the film director Luchino Visconti, who spent childhood summers here — his mother was a member of the family. Today it serves as an elegant exhibition and conference centre, opening to the public chiefly during events, with rooms dedicated to Visconti’s memory. Its lakeside park is one of the loveliest in the area.

3. Villa Bernasconi

A jewel of Italian Liberty, or Art Nouveau, completed in 1906 for the textile magnate Davide Bernasconi and designed by the Milanese architect Alfredo Campanini. Look closely at the façade and you’ll find the silkworm’s life cycle carved into the plaster — a nod to the fortune that paid for it. Since 2017 it has been a house-museum, one of the few Cernobbio villas you can freely step inside, with stained glass, wrought iron and painted interiors all lovingly restored.

4. Piazza Risorgimento et le front de lac

The heart of the town, and the reason so many people fall for it. This broad, café-lined square opens directly onto the water, with the mountains framing the view and ferries drifting past. Order a coffee or an evening aperitivo, watch the light change, and you’ll understand Cernobbio’s particular brand of easy elegance.

5. Mont Bisbino
