Piazza Garibaldi is the village’s living room \u2014 an arcaded, caf\u00e9-lined square set just back from the water, with the tourist office tucked under the porticoes. From here a broad promenade runs along the lake past the stately Grand Hotel Victoria of 1885 and a bronze monument by Francesco Somaini honouring the local silk weavers. Come in the early evening, when the light softens over Bellagio across the water and the whole shore turns gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the medieval core, where houses trace the outline of the vanished castle and stretches of its perimeter wall still stand. Look for the Spanish-style “sailing” bell tower of San Carlo, built on the fortress ruins in 1614, and for weathered medieval carvings set into the stonework. It is a ten-minute walk that peels back a thousand years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Roman road survives here as one of the lake’s finest footpaths. From Piazza Garibaldi the route heads north along the shore to Nobiallo, with its leaning thirteenth-century bell tower, then on toward the castle village of Rezzonico \u2014 roughly nine kilometres of lake, chestnut wood and old stone. Along the way you pass Villa la Gaeta, the lakeside mansion that appears in the James Bond film \u0643\u0627\u0632\u064a\u0646\u0648 \u0631\u0648\u064a\u0627\u0644<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
