Most of Lake Como asks you to look at the water. Lecco asks you to look up. The city sits at the foot of the lake’s south-eastern arm, hemmed in by the sawtooth ridge of the Resegone and the pale walls of the Grigne, and it keeps the rhythm of a working town rather than a resort. There are no grand hotel terraces here, no crush of day-trippers spilling off the boats. There is a lake, a river, mountains that begin where the streets end, and one of the greatest novels in the Italian language written straight into the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its second life was industrial. From the 19th century Lecco grew into a town of ironworks, silk mills and steel \u2014 the wire and metalworking that still hum in the valleys around it. That heritage is why Lecco feels solid and lived-in rather than curated, a provincial capital since 1992 with a real economy of its own. The Manzoni connection sits on top of all this: the writer’s family home, the streets he knew, the peaks he described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lecco’s landmark is impossible to miss. The Basilica di San Nicol\u00f2, dedicated to the patron saint of boatmen, is crowned by a soaring neo-Gothic campanile built between 1902 and 1904.
