Vassena, Lake Como: The Harbour Heart of Oliveto Lario

Vassena is the middle village and administrative heart of Oliveto Lario. A small harbour opens toward Mandello del Lario, old houses rise just behind the shore and paths climb through the olive-covered slopes toward the high ground of the Triangolo Lariano.

Quieter than Bellagio and more village-like than a resort, Vassena works best as a slow stop beside the Lecco branch.

A brief history

Vassena was one of three independent lakeside communities joined as Oliveto Lario in 1927. Olive cultivation, fishing and the route between Lecco and Bellagio shaped the settlement. As the central hamlet it later became the municipal seat, while retaining a compact waterfront and a historic parish church.

Where Vassena sits on the lake

Vassena lies between Onno and Limonta on the western shore of the Lecco arm. Mandello del Lario faces it across the lake, with the Grigna mountains rising beyond the opposite shore.

The best things to see in Vassena

1. The harbour and waterfront

Vassena’s small harbour is the natural centre of the village. Boats, a short promenade and wide views across the branch create an easy place to pause without the movement of a major ferry port.

2. The Church of Saints Nazaro and Celso

The eighteenth-century parish church stands among the village houses and provides Vassena’s principal historic landmark. Its position links the shore with the older lanes climbing behind it.

3. The old paths above Vassena

Historic routes climb from the village through woods and olive terraces toward Magreglio and the slopes below Monte San Primo. Even short sections provide higher views; longer walks require preparation.

Planning your visit

Getting there. Buses between Lecco and Bellagio serve Vassena. There is no local railway station and scheduled boat service is limited, so road transport is normally most practical.

Best for. A quiet harbour, olive landscapes and a less-visited base on the Lecco arm.

When to go. Spring and autumn for hillside walking; summer for the waterfront.
