Sorico, Lake Como: Where the Lake Opens Into the Alps

Sorico stands where Lake Como, the River Mera and the Alpine valleys meet. Reeds, flat wetland and a rare natural sandy shore replace the steep waterfronts found farther south, while old hamlets and the Sanctuary of San Miro rise on the mountain behind.

It is one of the lake’s most varied villages: part waterfront, part nature reserve and part gateway to Lake Mezzola.

A brief history

Sorico occupied a strategic position at the entrance to Valchiavenna and the routes across the Alps. The river, lake and mountain paths shaped travel and trade, while the surrounding wetlands remained difficult to settle. The hill sanctuary now dedicated to San Miro has Romanesque origins and became closely connected with the local saint who died here in the fourteenth century.

Where Sorico sits on the lake

Sorico lies at the far northern tip of Lake Como, beside the mouth of the River Mera. Gera Lario is immediately west, Colico faces south-east and the Pian di Spagna stretches toward Lake Mezzola.

The best things to see in Sorico

1. The Pian di Spagna reserve

The protected wetland covers the plain between Lake Como and Lake Mezzola. Reeds, meadows and waterways support migratory birds, and the unusually flat landscape is ideal for gentle walking and cycling.

2. The Sanctuary of San Miro

A path climbs above the village to the historic church of San Miro. The route adds a spiritual and panoramic dimension to Sorico, with views over the river mouth and northern lake.

3. La Punta and the river mouth

Near the Mera, La Punta forms an uncommon naturally sandy edge to Lake Como. Water and river conditions can change, so enjoy the landscape while following local safety and reserve rules.

Planning your visit

Getting there. Reach Sorico by upper-lake bus or road. Boat service is limited; the area is best explored with time for walking or cycling.

Best for. Birdwatching, easy nature routes and travellers curious about the lake’s transition into the Alps.

When to go. Spring and autumn for birds and walking; summer for long evenings by the northern shore.

Nearby. Gera Lario lies next door and Colico across the upper basin.

Sorico shows a different Lake Como: less villa garden, more river, reed bed, open sky and mountain frontier.
