Gera Lario, Lake Como: Where the Lake Meets the River Plain

At Gera Lario, Lake Como begins to change. The steep shores relax into the flat land around the River Mera, the mountains open toward Valchiavenna and the water takes on the broad, windswept character of the far north.

A marina, grassy waterfront and access to the Pian di Spagna reserve make this a village for nature and open space.

A brief history

Gera Lario grew at an old meeting point between lake travel, river routes and the approaches to the Alpine valleys. Fishing and agriculture were joined by trade moving toward Valchiavenna and the Splügen route. Today the harbour and watersports continue that close relationship with the water, while the historic centre remains gathered behind the shore.

Where Gera Lario sits on the lake

Gera Lario stands at the extreme northern end of Lake Como, near the mouth of the River Mera. Domaso lies to the south, Sorico and the Pian di Spagna to the north, and Colico faces the village across the lake.

The best things to see in Gera Lario

1. The marina and waterfront

The modern marina sits beneath a dramatic ring of mountains and is the village’s natural centre. The shore is good for a relaxed walk, watching sailing boats and seeing how the lake opens toward the river plain.

2. The old village and churches

Behind the waterfront, lanes climb through the older settlement. The churches of San Vincenzo and Santo Stefano reflect the village’s long religious history and its connection with fishermen and lake travel.

3. The Pian di Spagna landscape

Immediately north is the protected wetland between Lake Como and Lake Mezzola. Flat paths, reeds and open views make it very different from the rest of the lake and important for migratory birds.

Planning your visit

Getting there. Gera Lario is reached by upper western-shore bus or road. Boat service is limited compared with the central lake, so check current timetables before relying on it.

Best for. Sailing, birdwatching, cycling and travellers who enjoy the spacious landscape of the upper lake.

When to go. Spring and autumn for nature walks; summer for the marina and watersports.

Nearby. Sorico and the reserve lie north, Domaso south and Colico across the water.

Gera Lario feels like the lake taking a deep breath before the valleys and Alps begin.
